Smile Train Partner News Vol. 1 Issue 1
Partner Reward and Recognition Program
Smile Train is extremely proud of the one million high quality, free cleft surgeries we have accomplished together over the last 15 years. Millions of lives have been transformed through the generous care YOU provide each and every day. Your work is nonstop and stretches across all disciplines. Despite many challenges, you strive to provide top quality and safe cleft care to a growing number of patients.
Smile Train is systemically following the work you do to become a global leader in cleft care so that we can recognize YOU for your important contributions and accomplishments. To that end, Smile Train has started a Partner Reward and Recognition Program.
This program will track each Smile Train partner’s dedication and development in the areas of patient care, quality improvement, program awareness, and coordination within Smile Train’s global community. The knowledge gained through this program will give Smile Train a means of regularly recognizing and rewarding partners for being global leaders in cleft care.
Our Smile Train Partner Reward and Recognition Program will be renewed every calendar year with a new group of awardees. Only partners who complete the Annual Partner Survey will be eligible to participate.
In 2013, we had more than 700 respondents in 62 countries. With excitement, we share this year’s list of awardees. While we want to congratulate you ALL for your tremendous achievements this year, we are proud to announce our first 18 partner honorees:

Smile Train Virtual Surgery Simulator
Last year Smile Train released the first free, open-access, web-based, interactive surgical teaching tool for cleft lip and palate – the Virtual Surgery Simulator. The Simulator provides users with access to essential information about cleft anatomy, surgical markings and surgical techniques for cleft lip and palate surgery. It contains modules that teach unilateral lip repair, bilateral lip repair, palate repair and secondary nose repair through innovative animated graphics, clear written and verbal instructions and real-life intra-operative surgical videos.
Recently, Smile Train was selected to showcase the Simulator at the prestigious event TEDMED, The Hive. TEDMED is a global community dedicated to unlocking imagination in service of health and medicine and The Hive is focused on powering transformation and innovation towards a healthier future. This September, Smile Train will join some of the most innovative and influential actors in health technology to give a demonstration of the Simulator.
The Simulator was developed for our global partners. It is the only teaching tool of its kind and is completely free to use. We hope that you will visit https://smiletrain.biodigitalhuman.com/ to explore the simulator and help us share this technology with others who might be interested.
Smile Train’s top priority is ensuring the safety of every patient and we recognize how important proper nutrition is to safe surgery. Our Safety and Quality Protocol requires that Smile Train patients weigh at least 5kg and should be an appropriate weight for their age.
Our partners reported in 2013 that more than 30% of children that arrive in need of cleft surgery are malnourished.
Understanding that patients with clefts may face significant feeding challenges, Smile Train is working to develop resources for partners, patients and families with strategies for overcoming malnutrition and achieving appropriate weight for age. One of these resources, an animated video titled Feeding a Child with a Cleft Lip and Palate, is available online and can provide families with important information and strategies about feeding a child with a cleft.
